He was born in Manhufe, a village a few kilometres from here, and died in 1918 at 30, without Portugal really knowing who he was. In Paris, Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso showed alongside Modigliani, sent pieces to the Armory Show in New York and left Apollinaire speechless. Back here, he stayed forgotten until someone realised they had at home one of the most radical artists of his generation.
The museum moved into the Convento de São Gonçalo, right in the centre of Amarante, in a space adapted by architect Alcino Soutinho in the 1980s. The convent had already been through a fire in the 30s, when it was still working as a cinema, and that accident set off the idea of creating a cultural space here. The collection grew from there, with donations, estates and acquisitions, and today it brings together Amadeo's work with that of António Carneiro and Acácio Lino, all sons of the same territory.
The line that opens the visit says it all: "Am I impressionist, cubist, futurist, abstractionist? A bit of everything." It's not false modesty or a pose. It's the exact description of a painting practice that never stopped at one style because it never had to ask any of them for permission. Walking the rooms is realising that Amarante produced, in a very short window of time, something most cities don't produce in centuries.

Every two years, the museum and the Amarante council award the Prémio Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso. It's not an honorary prize or a gala to fill the calendar. It's a way of keeping the name active as a reference for Portuguese contemporary art, and not just as framed memory. The prize edition usually comes with an exhibition attached, which means the museum's programming swings between the historical collection and new work.
