the county's archaeology within reach
A 15th-century building today serves as the shell for a much older story. The walls are hundreds of years old, but what's inside them goes back to prehistory, passes through the Iron Age and reaches the Romanisation of the Minho territory.
Casa dos Nichos works as the archaeology hub of the Viana do Castelo county. The collection on display links directly to specific sites in the region: the citânia of Santa Luzia right there on the slope above the city, the medieval graves of Santa Maria de Geraz do Lima and the rock carvings of Carreço. The multimedia on hand helps you grasp the context of each piece without needing a guide.
If you want more than a self-guided visit, there are guided tours by appointment. Worth considering: the building itself, carefully restored, is as interesting as what it shows.
