Parque Aquático Lagoa do Falcão

lagoon with an island, fine sand and fewer slides than you expected

Six hectares in Outeiro da Cabeça, fifty minutes from Lisbon via the A8. No sea in sight, no river running through: what you get is a crystal-clear lagoon with a private fine-sand beach, surrounded by green space, in a corner of the Oeste that most people from Lisbon haven't found yet.

Lagoa do Falcão doesn't sell itself on giant water slides. What sets it apart is the pirate island sitting in the middle of the lagoon, with a tree-climbing circuit built into a boat and treasure-hunt trails scattered across the park. There's also a slide over 200 metres long, inflatable water courses with obstacles, canoeing, stand-up paddle and a 6-metre artificial climbing wall. Activities run in sessions, which keeps the lagoon usable rather than chaotic.

The park was revamped by the Campelos and Outeiro da Cabeça parish council and now sits within the municipal offer of inland water parks, closer in feel to an adventure park than a classic water park. There's also a children's pedagogical farm with animals, a picnic area and supporting green spaces. Parking is free, but spots fill up early on busy days.

It's the kind of place that works well when you're travelling with children of very different ages: the youngest stay on the sand and the inflatables, the older ones are out on the lagoon trying not to fall in, and the adults find some shade or hire a sun lounger and let the afternoon happen in that corner of the Oeste.

the island in the middle of the lagoon

The element no other park in the area has is exactly that: a pirate-themed island, reachable from the lagoon, with tree-climbing inside and a treasure hunt storyline that runs across the whole park. It's not just set dressing, it's an activity with a route and an objective. For anyone who arrives thinking it's "just another water park", the island tends to be the surprise of the day.

The slide runs over 200 metres and cuts across part of the site with views over the lagoon. You walk up to the top, and the descent gives you a sense of the park's scale from an angle you can't get down at ground level.
