Praia Fluvial Vila Cova à Coelheira

where the Alva slows down before the mountains

The river comes into the village almost without warning. The Alva water here has that greenish colour that only shows up when the source is little more than an hour away, up in the Serra da Estrela. In summer, when the sun hits the left bank, the birch trees cast shade as if they know exactly where you're going to sit.

The Praia Fluvial de Vila Cova à Coelheira sits on the edge of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, and you feel it. Nothing here shouts, no loud music, no neon. What there is is silence with texture: the sound of the current, the wind in the leaves, children on the playground some distance away. The picnic area has the basic equipment, the bar is open, and if you want to stay more than a day there's a campsite right downstream.

To get here, you pass through São Romão and then through the village. The sign for the beach appears next to the cemetery, which in this mountain context feels perfectly natural. The drive is already part of the experience: narrow roads, stone villages, the landscape opening up slowly. When you reach the bank of the Alva, you'll understand the detour was worth it.
