cold water, mountain above
At the foot of the Serra da Estrela, there are river beaches that promise and river beaches that deliver. This one is in the second group. The water comes down from the mountain without warning and reaches the sand with a temperature that doesn't forgive: you either go in or you don't.
Sabugueiro sits at over a thousand metres of altitude, surrounded by a landscape with nothing decorative about it. Granite is everywhere, the vegetation is dense and the silence is only broken by the current. The river beach matches that setting: no excess, no crowds, none of the bustle of coastal beaches.
Whoever gets here isn't passing through by chance. Sabugueiro has a reputation as the highest village in Portugal, and bringing that idea to the swim changes something in the experience. The feeling of being in a place that takes some effort to reach, even a small amount, makes the cold water feel like a reward.
You can combine it with a walk around the village before or after the swim. The granite, the schist and wool houses and the air that smells of mountain are still there when you come out of the water.
