museum or time machine, you decide
You walk in from Rua de Monchique, a stone's throw from the Douro, and what you find isn't quite a museum. It's more of a set you can poke around in. World of Discoveries put together a staged tour of the Portuguese age of navigation here: there are ship replicas to explore, spices to smell, Adamastor to face down and the conquest of Ceuta re-enacted in something between theatre and exhibition.
The location isn't accidental. You're literally between the Alfândega do Porto and the Douro, on the same geographical axis the fleets used to sail from. That closeness to the river gives context to what you see inside, even if the building is firmly 21st century.
The programme works best if you go with kids or with someone who doesn't know much about the Discoveries and wants to learn without reading panels. Audio guides and content come in several languages, so the language barrier isn't an excuse. For anyone already well versed on the subject, the visit is quick and lighter than expected.
When you come out, the Douro is right there. A ride on a rabelo boat closes the whole loop: you step into history inside the museum and end up living it on the riverbank.
