the beach of the village that gave the dam its name
Praia Fluvial do Alqueva sits in a bay of the Alqueva reservoir, about one and a half kilometres from the village of the same name, in the concelho of Portel. It's not on an open river: it's an artificial lake, formed by the damming of the Guadiana, which creates a water surface of around two hundred and fifty square kilometres stretching across five Alentejo concelhos (Portel, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Alandroal, Mourão and Moura). One of the largest artificial lakes in Europe.
The beach is recent. It opened on 4 August 2021, with a municipal investment of around six hundred thousand euros, built over a former picnic area near the dam structure. It has one hundred and fifty metres of sand, a wide stretch of open water in front, a car park (motorhomes welcome), and accessibility for reduced mobility. Blue Flag awarded since its first bathing season.
The water at Alqueva is different from the typical river beach in Portugal. It's been retained for decades, it's warmer, and the wide expanse makes it suited to water activities. At the beach you can hire paddleboards, kayaks and pedal boats. If you just want to sit on the sand in the shade, it works for that too, but this beach rewards you when you get in the water with something to do.
What makes the place particularly good is the wider context. The Grande Lago Alqueva region has one of the darkest night skies in western Europe. On clear nights, stay at the beach to watch the sun set over the water, wait for night to fall, and you'll see the Milky Way appear with a clarity rarely visible in populated areas.
