the river beach is inside the village, not outside it
Mosteiro is literal: the river beach sits within the settlement itself, right on the Ribeira de Pera that cuts through everything. The village is built on both banks of the stream, mostly on the left, at the bottom of a valley that is one of the main gashes in the southern slopes of the Serra da Lousã. The stream then continues to the Zêzere, rounding the Penedo Granada opposite Pedrógão Pequeno.
Everything in the village always revolved around water. Mosteiro has the largest irrigation system in the municipality of Pedrógão Grande, and along the Ribeira de Pera there was at least one water mill every 500 metres, feeding the region's milling industry. Today the structures have been restored and are part of the river beach.
The beach has lawns, high shade from pine and chestnut trees, and a small waterfall with a stream. The village chapel has architectural elements from the 15th and 16th centuries, with a date of 1868 carved into one of the windows. The name "Mosteiro" probably comes from an old monastery or hermitage from the early days of settlement, possibly of the Order of Malta, though no trace of it has been found. You come for the beach, you stay for the mills.
