the beach the city actually uses
Eleven hectares of white sand right up against the urban fabric of Matosinhos. There's no dirt track or pine-tree path to get here: you step out of the metro and you're on the sand in under five minutes. Praia de Matosinhos is probably the most accessible beach in the Porto area, in every sense of the word.
With capacity for ten thousand people in the bathing area, the space handles the weight of summer weekends without collapsing. There's consistent Atlantic swell on the northern side, where surfers and bodyboarders set up on heavier-sea days. The rest of the beach works like a kind of wet urban park: volleyball, beach football, parasols, sunbeds, bars.
The setting is what defines the experience here. To the west you have the ocean and to the east, the Matosinhos fishing port.
