Zoo da Maia

a human-scale zoo in the middle of Maia

Zoo da Maia has exactly the right size to spend a morning without feeling like you've walked kilometres, which makes all the difference when you're bringing kids or when the plan is genuinely to be there rather than just tick it off.

The animal collection covers the main groups: amphibians, birds, invertebrates, mammals, fish and reptiles. It's not the Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa, and it doesn't try to be. The scale means you can spend real time watching things, instead of just photographing and moving on.

One of the most specific moments at this zoo is the free-flight birds of prey demonstration. The birds fly loose, with no cage around them, and the educational component is deliberate. It's the kind of thing an adult can also find genuinely interesting, not just the kids beside you.

Maia isn't a standout tourist destination, but it sits right next to Porto. If you're in the north and looking for an afternoon with a clear plan without leaving the metropolitan area, the zoo works as a destination on its own.
