Sé da Guarda

granite, octagonal towers and a hundred and fifty years of building work

Out front, heavy octagonal towers and granite from the hills as far as you can see. The Sé da Guarda looks more like a fortress than a cathedral, and that reading isn't an exaggeration: in the highest city in Portugal, right on the border, the church was built to last.

Construction began in 1390, during the reign of D. João I, on the initiative of Bishop Vasco de Lamego. It dragged on for a hundred and fifty years and was only completed around 1540, already in the full Manueline period. That delay is today its greatest asset: the cathedral accumulates in layers the late Gothic (influenced by the Batalha workshop) and the Manueline (linked to the art of Diogo de Boitaca). Huguet, Boitaca, Marcos Pires and the sons of Mateus Fernandes all worked here.

The interior has a Latin cross plan, three staggered naves and ogival and star vaults that discharge into external flying buttresses. The main altarpiece is what many people come to see: sculpted in Ançã stone by João de Ruão in the 1550s, with more than a hundred figures telling the Life of Christ in overlapping registers. It's one of the finest Renaissance sculptural ensembles in Portugal.

The cathedral is on the Praça Luís de Camões, at the top of the historic centre. Opposite stands the old Paço da Câmara from the 18th century, and around it the medieval wall with the Torre dos Ferreiros. When you leave, the Beira Alta opens up around you.
