where schist holds the memory of lead and silver
Under your feet, there are over a hundred metres of excavated tunnels. Lousal was for decades one of the country's largest sulphide mines, and the museum grew in exactly the place where that history happened: inside the old industrial facilities, with the equipment where it always was.
The Museu Mineiro do Lousal doesn't reconstruct the past with scale models. It reconstructs it with the actual matter of the place. The extraction machines, the mine carts, the work spaces are present with a physicality that most industrial museums can't achieve. There's a difference between seeing a pneumatic hammer in a display case and being in a room that still smells of iron and damp.
The mine closed in 1988, but the village of Lousal carried on. The museum is part of a broader project to repurpose this coastal Alentejo territory, where pyritic schist surfaces and gives the landscape a colour you won't find anywhere else in the region. Come with time to understand what it means to extract ore in an area that today seems quiet between pines and cork oaks.

The Lousal deposit belongs to the Iberian Pyrite Belt, one of the largest concentrations of massive sulphides in the world, which crosses the south of Portugal and part of Spain. That's not an encyclopaedia detail: it's what explains why people dug here for decades, why the soils have that rusty colour and why the water in historic drainage lines still carries traces of acidity. The museum puts this geology into context without making it inaccessible.
Seeing the minerals extracted here, pyrite, sphalerite, galena, alongside an explanation of what this geological belt is, changes how you look at the terrain when you step outside.
