The Cobres stream runs through here and makes no apology for it. The bottom is fine sand, not a given in any Alentejo stream, and the bathing area was approved for swimming, which already says something about the water quality in this part of the Beja area.
Parque Fluvial de Cinco Reis is a few kilometres from the city, but the sense of distance is far greater. Around it, the Alentejo plain stretches out in no hurry, with montado and the typical silence of the deep interior. It's the kind of spot where the locals show up with coolers and folding chairs and stay the whole afternoon.
The park has facilities in place: changing rooms, a picnic area, parking. It's not a roadside with a path to the water. It's a space set up to receive people, which in the context of an Alentejo stream still surprises anyone arriving for the first time.
If you know Beja but have never been to Cinco Reis, you're missing what the city's people keep for themselves when summer bears down hard on the Baixo Alentejo.
