trás-os-montes wildlife for real, not in a diorama
A one-kilometre route and twenty-three native breeds: Mirandese cattle, Bísaro pig, Montesinho black goat, Churra Galega Bragançana sheep. These are the animals that shaped this landscape for centuries, not species picked to impress.
The Parque Biológico de Vinhais sits right inside the Parque Natural de Montesinho, and that shifts the logic of the place. It isn't a zoo pretending to be nature. It's a space thought out for anyone who wants to grasp the wildlife and flora of this region before heading out into it.
There's a Centro Micológico dedicated to wild mushrooms, which makes complete sense in a territory where fungi are culture, gastronomy and local economy. And there's the Centro Interpretativo "Vida de Lobo", because the Iberian wolf still moves around these mountains and deserves more than a passing reference.
the mycological centre
Vinhais is one of the municipalities with the strongest mycological tradition in Trás-os-Montes. Mushrooms aren't a recent gastronomic fad here: they're part of the calendar, the forest and the table. The Centro Micológico de Vinhais is one of the few spaces in Portugal where that is systematised with an educational intent.
The surroundings of the park, with cork oak, oak and chestnut, are the habitat of species like the bolete or the amanita. Knowing the basics before heading into the hills isn't fussy, it's safety.
