Zoo Santo Inácio

the biggest in the north, for real

There's a glass tunnel under the lion enclosure. You're a few centimetres from the paws, separated by a transparent panel, and you both understand the situation is strange. That's the kind of detail that defines Zoo Santo Inácio: the closeness is built into the architecture, not an accident.

Over 500 animals, over 100 species, in Vila Nova de Gaia. The title of largest zoo in northern Portugal isn't empty marketing: the space is vast, green, and designed so the visit fills a full day without feeling like you're queuing one after another.

The programme includes moments with lions and penguins that are part of the standard ticket, not extra packages. In winter the zoo is quieter, and between November and February there's a night-time light installation that turns the space into something completely different from what it is during the day.

Gaia has the Douro right there, but here, tucked into a green stretch of the municipality, is where you'll find the kind of afternoon kids will bring up again for weeks.
