Location of Museu Convento San Payo

Museu Convento San Payo

between ancient walls and contemporary sculpture

Vila Nova de Cerveira has a connection to the art world that is no accident. The Bienal de Cerveira, one of the oldest contemporary art biennials on the Iberian Peninsula, was born here in 1978, and the name of José Rodrigues is part of that origin. The Museu Convento San Payo is the space that holds the work of that sculptor, born in Luanda, trained in Porto, settled in Cerveira.

José Rodrigues wasn't an artist of a single language. Sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, medallic art, set design, sacred art: the work is vast and spans decades. He was part of the Quatro Vintes, the collective that in the 1960s helped introduce the avant-garde into Portugal at the same time the rest of the western world was experimenting with it. He illustrated Eugénio de Andrade and Jorge de Sena. He created series of Christs. The convent gives all of that the scale it deserves.

The space itself is a converted convent, with nature coming in through the walls. The relationship between the building, the pieces and the outside is part of the visit, not just backdrop. You're in the Alto Minho, a few metres from the Minho river and the border with Galicia, in a territory that accumulates centuries with great calm.

the artist who stayed

Rodrigues could have stayed in Porto, where he studied, taught and co-founded the Cooperativa Árvore in 1963. He chose Cerveira. He helped create the Bienal, the Escola Profissional de Ofícios Artísticos, and left work scattered throughout the town. The museum is the entry point for understanding why this place carries the artistic weight it does, disproportionate to the size of the town.
