Praia Fluvial Penedo Furado

where the river carved the stone and stayed

There's a hole in the rock. That's exactly it: an opening the water carved over centuries, there in the riverbed, between the schist and the green of the stream. That detail gave the place its name, and anyone coming for the first time gets why the moment they reach Penedo Furado.

Vila de Rei is in the heart of the country, in an area the tourist maps tend to skip over. That's precisely why this stretch of the river has that rare quality: it feels like it's you, the water and the sound of the trees. The boardwalks that follow the route to the river beach are part of the experience, with schist everywhere and the landscape changing at every bend.

The water is cold even in August. It's warning and promise at once. You dive in, feel the shock, and get that there are no filters here, no scene set up for anyone. What's there is what's there, and it's enough.

If you do the route slowly, the stream reveals itself in pieces. Getting to the sand tired, sitting and looking at the hole in the rock with the water passing underneath, that's the whole thing summed up in one moment.

the boardwalks and the way there

It's not just the beach. The Vila de Rei council built boardwalks that follow the route along the stream, and that walk is an essential part of what makes Penedo Furado different from other river beaches. You don't just show up and lay the towel.

Schist dominates everything: the ground, the valley walls, the banks. It's a geology that gives the place a warm, dark tone contrasting with the water and the vegetation. You'll notice the light hits differently here, especially in the late afternoon.
