cliff, village and a horizon with an island thrown in
Porto Covo shows up often on "most beautiful beaches in the country" lists. Believe the hype, but for reasons the listicles rarely explain properly. Praia Grande sits right next to the village, has fine sand and is tucked between tall yellow cliffs that give it an unusual scale for a beach this easy to reach. In front, out at sea, Ilha do Pessegueiro closes the horizon with that low, understated silhouette that looks like it was placed there to add depth to every photo.
The beach is inside the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, which in practice means what you see around you is what's been there for centuries: no concrete, no development pressed against the cliff, no plastic commerce on the way down. The water is clean and when the swell arrives, the beach has enough wave to draw surfers. Not a competition surf spot, but it works.
Porto Covo is a small village with whitewashed houses and a square that still functions as a real meeting point. Praia Grande is the best-served of all the village's beaches, and that whole set of beaches is the real argument for this stretch of coast: within a short radius you've got cove beaches, pebble beaches, beaches with cliff staircase access, each with its own logic. Praia Grande is the entry point; you find the rest on foot.
the park at your back
The Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina is one of the largest in Europe in protected coastal length. That has a direct consequence for anyone going to Praia Grande: the cliff framing the beach won't change, the low scrub on top won't be removed, and the path north linking to the other beaches stays as a dirt track. The protection isn't scenery; it's structure.
The coast here is a transition between the Alentejo and the Southwest. The wind can be strong in the afternoon, especially in summer when the northerly picks up. Mornings are generally better for anyone who just wants to lie on the sand.
