where the alva does what it wants
Some villages exist beside a river and some villages exist because of one. Penalva de Alva is the second kind. The Alva water defines the rhythm of the place, the background sound, the reason to stop.
The bathing area is wedged between schist and dense vegetation. It isn't a fine sand beach or a bank set up for crowds. It's a place on a human scale, where the river runs with enough force to feel alive but with enough calm to let you settle in.
The municipality of Oliveira do Hospital has several river beaches, but Penalva de Alva has something that sets it apart: the village is right there. It isn't an isolated beach in an open field, it's a place with context, with granite and schist houses around it, with the weight of somewhere that existed before you arrived and will carry on after. You dive into the Alva and when you lift your head there's mountain in front of you.
It's the kind of afternoon that doesn't need explanation, just living, with little planning and plenty of willingness to stay longer than you expected.
