Monte Selvagem

big nature, real animals, alentejo stretching out of sight

There's a moment, once you're inside the park, when you get that you're not in a normal zoo. Monte Selvagem takes up several hundred hectares of Alentejo montado, and the animals have proper space, not enclosures for photographing through bars. The landscape of cork oak and holm oak is as much a part of the visit as the animals are.

The park is in Lavre, a small village in the Montemor-o-Novo municipality, and that location isn't a detail. You're in the central Alentejo, with everything that implies: a different light, a different silence, and a horizon that doesn't close in on you. The experience shifts depending on the season, and the Alentejo summer is a reality you should think about before booking.

It's a place that works well for families, but it isn't an amusement park with animals in the background. The rhythm is different. You need time to cover the space and to wait for the animals to come into view. Anyone who comes in a rush leaves frustrated.

The montado that wraps around all of this isn't scenery, it's habitat. You sit in Lavre and feel that with every step.
