Ecomuseu de Barroso - Espaço Padre Fontes

the museum that is also a priest, a village and an idea

There are places that exist because someone decided they had to exist. This is one of them. The Ecomuseu de Barroso was born out of the stubbornness of a priest from Montalegre who spent decades recording, gathering and refusing to let Barroso be swallowed by oblivion.

Padre Fontes, born in Cambezes do Rio in 1940, isn't just the name on the door. He's the reason for everything inside: folk medicine, village know-how, farming practices, rituals, the stories that don't fit in any manual. The same man who set up the Congresso de Medicina Popular in Vilar de Perdizes and the "Sextas-Feiras 13" in Montalegre built here a living archive of a region that many people only know in passing.

The ecomuseum isn't a static museum with closed display cases. It runs rotating temporary exhibitions, photographers who show Barroso through their own eyes, and a digital presence that already counts more than six million visits. What sits in Montalegre is the physical headquarters of something that works as a memory network spread across the region.

Leaving here with the sense that you got Barroso a little better is almost inevitable, especially if you arrive without knowing much about the Trás-os-Montes plateau right around you.
