Praia da Rocha

three kilometres of beautiful chaos

Wide beach, pale sand, orange cliffs framing the whole thing. That's how Praia da Rocha shows up in photographs and, to be honest, that's exactly what it is.

In summer, this place is its own creature. The beach has three kilometres of fine sand and, even when it's packed, there's room. The rock formations dotting the beach are the element that changes everything: they create natural nooks, divide the space without anyone having to ask, give the whole thing a sense of scale. This isn't a straight line of sand with nothing else going on.

The Fortaleza de Santa Catarina sits right there at the eastern end, facing the mouth of the Rio Arade and the Portimão marina. From up top you can see the river meeting the sea, the boats, and the other bank of Ferragudo closing the frame. That view is worth the climb.
