the doyen of the douro's viewpoints
A shale cliff with more than 500 metres of vertical drop above the Douro. That's where you arrive by car, park, walk down a flight of steps and understand why Penedo Durão is called the doyen of Freixo de Espada à Cinta's viewpoints. The view doesn't ask permission: the river cutting through slate mountains, the Spanish Saucelle dam below, the lands of Salamanca on the other side of the border.
The rock sits in the parish of Poiares, already inside the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, just over two kilometres from the town. At 727 metres, the observation platform gives you a 180-degree panorama over the Douro canyon. Around the cliffs, olive trees, almond trees and vines cling to the shale with the stubbornness the landscape demands.
when the sky has raptors
Penedo Durão is one of the best-known spots in the country for watching large birds of prey in flight. The natural park around it supports populations of Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures and golden eagles, which use the updrafts from the cliffs to soar without effort. With luck and patience, you can spot them from the terrace without binoculars, just with the right angle of sun.
There's also a swing installed at the viewpoint. It might sound like a minor detail, but it's the kind that reveals the scale of the place: sitting in it, with 500 metres of empty air under your feet, the Douro Internacional perspective gets even rawer.
