between rocks and clean water, nothing else around
The Ribeira de Alge takes its time. It has been cutting through rock slowly, for millions of years, and the result is this: natural pools sculpted in quartzite, wedged between two cliffs with a crest that looks as if it was split with a hammer. Geology did the work, you just have to get in the water.
The Fragas de São Simão are in Figueiró dos Vinhos, in the inland Leiria that most people race past on the motorway. The water here is cold and transparent all the way to the bottom. Small stones visible down there, without any effort. The kind of clarity that isn't easy to find anymore.
To the south there are channels and small islands along the bank. You can stay put on the beach or follow that path and discover the stream at your own pace. Most people stay on the beach. You might not.
When the heat bears down inland and the coast is bursting with people, this closed valley between quartzite has its own logic. Water that doesn't disappoint, natural shade and the sound of the stream as a constant backdrop.
