the bay that tricks the atlantic
Two stone breakwaters advance into the sea and change everything. What should be open ocean behaves like a lagoon, with tamed waves and water that doesn't knock you over at the first step. That detail of coastal engineering is what defines the character of Praia da Baía and separates it from every other beach on the northern coast.
The beach sits right in the centre of Espinho, with the seafront promenade running alongside the sand. In summer, it's the most popular spot in the city: hired sunbeds, windbreaks in every colour. Accessibility is taken seriously, with an amphibious wheelchair available.
The surf here has its own reputation. The wave at Baía is considered the best in northern Portugal, with World Surfing League championships held on this stretch. The protection of the breakwaters creates specific conditions that surfers know well and that aren't easily replicated at other breaks in the region.
If you arrive out of season, you'll find an urban beach without the hustle, the promenade almost to yourself and the breakwaters doing the same work they always do, holding the Atlantic back a few metres from a grid-plan city.
