CICA - Centro Interpretativo do Castelo de Ansiães

where the city died and stayed that way

There was a city here. Not a village, not an outpost, a city with churches, palaces, people and movement. Today what's left is stones, wind and a view over the Douro that makes you understand why someone wanted this place so badly.

The CICA exists to put context on those stones. The interpretation centre sits right next to the castle of Ansiães, and the work they do is simple and necessary: show what existed there before Portugal existed. Because Ansiães was a municipal seat before Carrazeda, it had fairs, judges, a life of its own, and then slowly died until it became an archaeological site.

The visit combines the inside of the centre with a trip out onto the ground. You don't just stand there looking at models. You go out to the ruins, you grasp the scale of what was there, and suddenly the Douro appears below and the whole thing gains weight. It's the kind of place that stays in your head longer than you expected.

Carrazeda isn't a passing-through destination. Whoever gets here chose to get here, and the castle of Ansiães makes more sense that way, without rush and without a crowd.
