Parque Biológico da Porta do Mezio

gateway to the gerês, before you actually go in

There's a place that works as a decompression chamber between the world out there and the Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês. It isn't a visit to just any wildlife park: the Porta do Mezio was designed as a real entry point into the protected territory, and you feel that in the choice of species, in the framing of the landscape, in everything.

The Biological Park shows the wildlife and flora of the Peneda-Gerês, which means what you see here has immediate geographical context: they're the animals and plants of the territory you're starting to walk into. It isn't a zoo with species from all over the world, it's an introduction to what actually exists right there, in the mountains around.

The stargazing component has Starlight Stellar Park international certification, renewed recently. That isn't decoration: Mezio sits in an area with low light pollution, and the night programme is taken seriously. If you can stay over for the night, the detour is worth it.

by day, by night and in between

The seasonal activities include guided walking trails, nature workshops and outings that head off from here into the national park.

For families with children, there's also the Aldeia dos Pequeninos, an adventure park and a pool. The place was thought out so that you'd stay longer than two hours.
