two weirs, oak trees and pond skaters on the water
Two weirs on the Rio Águeda create a calm, contained mirror of water, different from most river beaches in the region. It isn't an open stretch of river: it's a basin held in by structures that slow the current and leave the water almost still.
The Praia Fluvial da Redonda is in Castanheira do Vouga, in the municipality of Águeda, in a valley area surrounded by dense vegetation. The oaks are old enough to give real shade, and the wooden tables underneath them make sense on a long afternoon.
Watch the surface of the water: if you see small insects gliding across it without sinking, those are pond skaters (Gerris lacustris). Their presence here is a direct indicator of water quality, and they're not found on just any watercourse. Colourful dragonflies and damselflies complete the picture, which says something about the balance of the ecosystem here.
The mountain valley setting, with the PR8 (Trilho da Serra) trail starting nearby, places this spot in a wider territory worth exploring on foot before or after getting in the water.
