animals from the hills, two steps from the moorish city
Opened in 2001 by the câmara of Silves, the Quinta Pedagógica was built with a clear purpose: keeping alive the animal and plant species typical of the Algarve hills, in a territory where rural memory is slowly disappearing. It's not a zoo or a theme park. It's a working farm, with real animals and a preservation logic.
The standout is the Algarve-breed bull, acquired specifically to reinforce the focus on indigenous species. The Quinta Pedagógica de Silves has a riding arena, the Casa do Moleiro and covered space for groups, making it a place designed for visits with children who need more than just looking.
It sits within the municipality of Silves, a city with an Arab castle and Gothic cathedral less than ten minutes on foot. Combining both visits makes sense: the farm shows what always happened outside the walls, the land and the animals that fed the city for centuries.
