town beach, with pebbles and pools thrown in
You land in Madeira and, seconds after the plane window reveals the ocean, you're already flying over Santa Cruz. The Cristiano Ronaldo airport is right here, a few kilometres from the village. That proximity defines the experience: Praia das Palmeiras is urban, accessible and has no pretensions of being an isolated paradise.
Rounded pebbles cover the beach. No fine sand, no feet sinking slowly. The water is clear and the bathing complex divides into two distinct territories: on one side the pebble beach with direct sea access via a jetty with steps, on the other two saltwater pools, one for adults and one for children. The Blue Flag has been here for more than two decades.
Along the palm-lined promenade, the village wraps around the space without swallowing it. This isn't a beach to escape civilisation: it's a beach to be inside it, with mountains behind you and the Atlantic in front. Anyone arriving by car comes along the road that runs right beside the sea and quickly understands why people on the eastern coast of the island choose this place without thinking too hard about it.
a bathing complex with history
The local council maintains this space at a level of equipment that isn't common for pebble beaches. There's a cable car with a ramp for reduced mobility, obstacle-free pedestrian access and a first aid station. In summer, the average is around 400 bathers a day, and a lifeguard is on duty throughout the entire bathing season.
The restaurant stays open all year, which makes Praia das Palmeiras a place with a use beyond the warm months. The village has its own rhythm and the beach follows it.
