where the river calls the shots and the shade helps
Cold water, slow current, banks with trees blocking the overhead sun. It's the kind of place locals know well and that doesn't show up on the usual itineraries. The Praia Fluvial da Fróia is in Proença-a-Nova, set into a landscape of schist and dense vegetation that makes the inland heat feel more bearable than it is.
The river is the main event. The beach has sand and grass, a marked swimming area, and that quiet that only places with little mobile signal can manage. It isn't a beach for spectacle, it's a beach for use. You arrive, put down your towel, get in the water.
The Pinhal Interior doesn't forgive those who show up unprepared. Bring what you need, because the basics are there, but the extra comfort is on you. And when the afternoon cools down and the light hits the banks differently, you completely lose track of the fact there's a road nearby.
