Praia Fluvial de Vale de Juncal

where the Tuela bends before reaching the Tâmega

There's an elbow in the river Tuela where the current slows and the bank widens. That's where the flat rocks appear, the fine sand and the room to stretch the towel without being on top of anyone. Praia Fluvial de Vale Juncal makes use of exactly that geometry of the river: a calm stretch on a watercourse that, at other points, isn't so inviting.

Mirandela is a few kilometres away, but here the context is another. Vineyards and olive groves on the horizon, schist on the slopes, the silence that comes from being on one of the banks of the Nordeste Transmontano where tourism still hasn't made a routine. It's not a spot you find full of flags and entertainment: it's a spot you find because you went looking.

The Tuela here has a clarity that lets you see the bottom in detail. The surrounding riverside vegetation gives enough shade for those who don't want to be in the sun the whole time. When the day closes, the light hits the slopes in a way that justifies staying a bit longer.
