cold water, proper shade and nobody trying to sell you anything
A smooth rock, water coming down from the mountains and a silence only broken by whoever jumps in. That's what most mornings are like here, before the heat really sets in and families arrive with their cool boxes.
The Praia Fluvial Nossa Senhora da Piedade is in Lousã, up against the mountain landscape, with water that comes down fresh even on days when the tarmac is burning. The flow varies by season, but when it's good it's really good: clear, cold, visible bottom.
It isn't a beach with waves or soft sand. It's rock, it's leaves, it's that smell of damp green that you don't find on the coast. You bring a towel, you bring water shoes if your feet are sensitive, and you leave the rest at home.
If you already know the Serra da Lousã because of the schist villages, this beach is the natural complement, the place where you end the day after walking paths of stone and silence.
what you'll find
- cold water even in August
- natural shade from the trees around it
- rocky bottom, better with water shoes
- a local atmosphere, far from the coastal tourist circuit
- straightforward access, no fuss
