Praia de Odeceixe

where the river meets the atlantic

A strip of sand with two worlds: on one side the ocean, on the other the Rio Seixe running into the sea. Not a metaphor, geography. You're literally on the border between Algarve and Alentejo, with the river marking the line.

The Praia de Odeceixe won the title of Maravilha Praia de Portugal and it's easy to see why without needing the argument. The valley descending from the village frames the beach as if it were designed that way, with the hills cutting the wind and giving this corner a scale that the exposed beaches of the Costa Vicentina don't have.

You get there on foot or by car to the car park in the valley, then continue on foot. The walk is already part of it. When you arrive, you have a choice: saltwater or fresh water, depending on what the river is doing at that time of year.

This is Costa Vicentina for real, Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina with all the consequences, including the fact that the village just up there, two kilometres away, still looks like a place where people actually live.

what you'll find

  • the Rio Seixe separating two districts right on the sand
  • an enclosed valley that shelters from the prevailing wind
  • a short uphill walk from the car park to the beach
  • the village of Odeceixe visible up above, looking out to sea
